The most beautiful and blackest pigment, comes from ……

part 1: The most beautiful and blackest pigment, comes from …

part 3 : Artist Residency in old mine building

I talk a lot about paint over here, which I’m making from pigment-ground coal. But what I didn’t told you yet, is with which coal I’m doing all these tests. Not all coal is the same you know. Far from.

From Semple’s Black over coal from Zolder to weird tests with purchased coal.

kibble coal from Zolder - anv.beMy collaboration with Semple’s search for the blackest paint possible for everyone (except Anish Kapoor), was the beginning of my “coalpaint story”. I started experimenting with coal from Zolder. That paint was dark brown. Then I tried anthracite. The result was a neutral black paint. Mixed with Semple’s Black 2.0, it was the blackest existing paint. Until here you were up-to-date.

But I wanted to make the paint more black. The more light something absorbens, the darker it seems. A matt surface absorbens light. But the antracite I used, shines. A shining pigment reflects the light in stead of absorbing it. I should be able to fix that…

tests manipulated coal pigment- AnV.be

Fix it, like in: trying to make the coal mat. For this I did the most idiotic tests: Mixing coal with White Spirit, with turpentine, with Ammonia, with … all unhealthy stinking products, which deprived the coal of its luster. I transformed the matted coal into paint, hoping to get the black paint even blacker. And that worked. The difference between the paint results was by far not as big as the difference between dry pigment, but it was there. A lot of hassle. And really not healthy. Good for a test strip, not for producing.

But because of the color difference between Zolder’s coal and that of the purchased coal …

I became very curious about what color the coal of Beringen would give. Below the washing plant, I could see piles of coal, which I would really like to have. But the site was closed with fences, and there was a warning sign that there’s camera surveillance. Damn.

If there is something that I learned in 2017

then it is, that if I really want something, I just have to dare to ask. The answer is surprisingly often yes, and I am incredibly happy about that.
The rest you can read tomorrow :-), in part 2.

Sorry, you don’t have one of my paintings

It happens almost twice a year: a mail in my inbox that says “I have one of your paintings”. Mostly the writer wants to know what it’s worth… ouch. That kind of mail, is never about a painting, but about a reproduction. In 2006, Aldi Belgium sold numbered en signed reproductions of 2 of my paintings, M3 and D11. I spent a whole week signing these things.

Reproductions are good quality photo prints, not paintings. My original paintings are oil on canvas, and I still have them myself.

I dived into my archive looking for pictures from that time. Here’s one from the day the repro’s where delivered. My arm hurts spontaneously by seeing these piles.

To answer the most common question: that print is not worth much. But it’s not too late to buy one of my real paintings :-).

BAD 2018 in ICC Gent

Yves Velter on BAD2018

BAD what? Honestly, I never heard about BAD before last week. BAD is a Belgium Art and Design fair in Gent. And a good one. I went to the preview last night, and came home happy. It was so good to see Yves Velter‘s work once again. I love it so much.

Galerie S&H De Buck op BAD2018Lots of interesting work, like these from Christina Mignolet, and Sven Verhaeghe for example, in the booth of Galerie S&H De Buck.

I also enjoyed the works of Els Vos. Oh well, it’s just to much to mention. You have to go and see for yourself. You can visit BAD2018 untill Sunday 11/02 18.30h. You can find all the info you need on their website.

Painting rack, and geraniums in winter

It could have been a painting title, but it isn’t. It’s a picture title ;-). For years I’m talking about how I need a proper rack to store my paintings. Now I finally have it.

Painting storage, custom made painting rack

Previous, my paintings were stalled in a very small room, difficult to acces. Now I do have a practical space to show them to curators and potential buyers. I found a carpenter willing to do the job on Twizzi. And I’m so happy about it, that for once I don’t mind to do some advertising for free: Gerry from www.houtmetstijl.eu had some real good ideas. Sleepovers, on the other hand, are going to be less content, because our guest bed is now for sale on 2e hands.be. Helas, one cannot have all in live. But you do can have much ;-).

Put Geraniums inside before it starts to freeze outside

One thing a person can have, is geraniums in winter. We take them indoors as soon as it starts to freeze outside. They’re happy in my studio and in the guest / painting room. Blessed to see those cheerful summer flowers, it makes winter so much lighter. Oooh summer <3… I can almost smell you.

Acrylic paint, coal & stones from the slagheap on ceramic, 2017

I made this ceramic in 2012, but I didn’t like the glaze … so I upcycled it ;-)
The stones are from the slag heap from Beringen. (I was born a stone’s throw from that slag heap ;-)

Black Friday?

Oh well, that’s just an ordinary day in my studio :-)

So yes, I’m still trying to create the nicest black. I have a very beautifull, very dark one, with a velvet structure. I absolutely love it. And it’s really really black. Now I’m trying to find the best way to produce it, because I have big plans for next year, and I’ll need a lot of this paint.
