St.-Barbara’s Relief
2012
Ceramic, coal.
Series of 9 artworks, each 26 x 40 cm
St.-Barbara is the miners’ patron saint. In the stop-motion images series “St.-Barbara’s Relief”, she wipes the sweat off her forehead: she’s relieved that she doesn’t have to protect the Belgian miners any more. Everybody is safe and sound now.
The number on the mining lamp she’s holding, is the number Ans father had when he worked in the coal mine of Houthalen (Limburg, Belgium).
Made on the occasion of Manifesta 9 in Waterschei, Belgium. This was a Parallel Event.
